Cookie policy – Footy Tips

Daily football tips need very little technology, and Footy Tips keeps it that way. This policy lists the cookies and similar tools on the site, their purposes, and the ways to refuse or change them. A cookie is a small text file kept by the browser on a device; local and session storage entries and counting pixels behave in much the same way.

Consent rules

Regulation 6 of the Privacy and Electronic Communications (EC Directive) Regulations 2003 (PECR) governs the matter. Storing information on a user’s device, or reading what is already stored there, calls for clear and comprehensive information and for the user’s consent. The exception is storage strictly necessary for a service the user has asked for. Consent must reach the UK GDPR standard (Article 4(11) and Article 7): freely given, specific, informed, unambiguous, and as easy to withdraw as to give. If cookies lead to the processing of personal data, the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 also apply.

Files set without consent

These are the files without which the site could not run dependably: keeping a session open, balancing load across servers, shielding forms from abuse and remembering the cookie choice. No separate choice is asked for. Session files vanish when the browser closes; the stored choice lasts no longer than twelve months.

Files set after consent

Functional files keep settings, for example the tip tables last opened. Analytics files count page views and show which pages are read, so content can be improved. The cookie banner must be answered first; only then are these set. Shortened IP addresses are used for analysis, and no profiles following behaviour across other sites are built.

Outside services

Embedded videos or maps may bring cookies of their own, and the provider’s privacy rules apply to them; an objection goes to that provider. Footy Tips sets no advertising cookies that build profiles for personalised ads without a clear choice in the banner.

Changing or withdrawing consent

The “Cookie settings” link in the footer allows consent to be changed or withdrawn at any moment. Withdrawal works for the future and leaves earlier processing lawful. Browsers also let their users block and delete cookies in privacy settings. Once the necessary files are deleted, the banner returns and some features may briefly stop working.

Complaints

A complaint about personal data handling can go to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s supervisory authority. How personal data is processed is explained in the privacy policy.
